George R. Phillip

George R. Phillip, 86, 2024 Center St., Stevens Point, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at Ministry St. Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stevens Point, with the Rev. Al Burkhardt officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Stevens Point.

Visitation will be at the Shuda Funeral Chapel in Stevens Point from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and at the church from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the Mass. The Knights of Columbus of which he was a 4th degree member will combine with the general rosary prayed at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

A memorial will be established for St. Joseph Parish.

Mr. Phillip was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Stevens Point, a son of the late Albert F. and Margaret (Bungert) Phillip. He attended local schools and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1950.

Prior to earning his degree he entered the United States Air Force in December 1942. He served as a fighter pilot during World War II and remained in the Air Force Reserve until retiring in 1983 with a rank of major, receiving three overseas bars, the Victory Medal and the American Theatre Ribbon.

He was married to Geraldine A. Collins on July 23, 1949.

He taught school in Redgranite for five years before beginning his career with General Foods Corp. as a sales manager, retiring in 1983.

He was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Knights of Columbus-4th Degree and the Air Force Association.

He served two terms on the Stevens Point Catholic School Board.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Marilyn (Tom) Cychosz, Karen Patton and Joan (Tom) Kluck; one son, James (Jeanne); three brothers, Donald, Maurice (Helen) and Melvin (Diana); one sister, Dorothy (John) Piatt; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Thomas; and three brothers, Raymond, Gerald and Albert Jr.
