| Robert A. Van Order Robert A. Van Order, 78, Park Ridge, died Sunday, June 14, 2009. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Stevens Point, with the Rev. John Potaczek officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in St. Stephen Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Shuda Funeral Chapel in Stevens Point from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and again from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Friday. The Stevens Point Elks Club, of which he was a member, will hold a ritual at 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel. A memorial in lieu of flowers will be established in his name for the Pacelli Athletic Association and The St. Jude Children's Hospital. Condolences may be offered online at www.shudafuneral.com. Mr. Van Order was born Oct. 21, 1930, in the town of Hull, a son of the late Bert and Ida (Berberg) Van Order. He attended local schools and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1948. He entered the United States Army in Stevens Point on Sept. 13, 1948. He served as a corporal "T" and earned the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations and National Defense Service Medals and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged Aug. 13, 1952, at Wolters Air Force Base in Texas. He was married to Marilyn Gossage on Dec. 12, 1952, in Dubuque, Iowa. The couple settled in Milwaukee before moving to the Stevens Point area in 1958. He was manager at Behling's Transfer before becoming a driver for H.O. Wolding for 26 years, where he earned the Safe Driver Award for logging more than 1 million miles without an accident. While driving for H.O. Wolding he traveled to every state in the union. He retired in 1996. He marched in the inaugural parade for Harry S Truman and was a member of the Plover Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, the Stevens Point Elks Club, AMVETS, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Quarterback Club and the Pacelli Cardinal Club. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; four daughters, Gale (Kim) Chartier, Madison, Jill (John) Gates, Lisa (Paul) Tokatlidas, Melbourne, Australia, and Holly (Craig) Becker, Greenville, S.C.; three sons, Dean, Stevens Point, Todd (Marilyn), La Crosse, and Scott (Dayna), Denver, Colo.; and 16 grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Heidi; and one sister, Adeline. |
