Marie Genevieve Opperman

Marie Genevieve Opperman, 89, 216 Cedar St., Whiting, died Sunday, June 28, 2009, at St. Michael's Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Boston Funeral Home, with Pastor Matt Mallek officiating.

A time of fellowship & sharing of memories will follow the service at the funeral home until 1 p.m.

Mrs. Opperman was born Jan. 5, 1920, in Stevens Point, one of twin daughters of the late George Leon and Irene (Plattner) Lewis. She attended local schools, spending three years at Emerson High School before graduating with P.J. Jacobs High School's first graduating class.

She was employed by the Bake-Rite Baking Company.

She was married to Arthur A. Opperman on May 31, 1941, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stevens Point. He died on Feb. 8, 1999.

During their married life they lived in Stevens Point and the village of Whiting.

She worked on crewel embroidery and was involved in bird-watching. She was often seen riding on the back of a motorcycle with her husband and went on a "Harley" ride to celebrate her 88th birthday.

Survivors include one daughter, Nancy, Stevens Point; one son, Erich (Ann), North Augusta, S.C.; her twin sister, Millie (Lewis) Fox, El Paso, Texas; two brothers, John Oliver (Dorothy) Lewis, Woodruff, and Gerald Robert Lewis, Leopolis; three grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Betty Nemeth, Margie Vetch and Nina Gollonik; and three brothers, George "Bud" Jr., William "Bill" James and Ralph "Ed" Edward.
