Ted J. Meyer

Ted J. Meyer, 91, Shawano, father of two Portage County men, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at the Shawano Medical Center in Shawano.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 27, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano, with the Rev. Len Evers celebrating. Interment will be in Tomahawk.

Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. Saturday until the Mass.

Mr. Meyer was born June 26, 1917, in Pittsburgh, Pa., a son of the late Walter and Olga (Bednarski) Meyer. He attended school in Chicago, Ill., and later in Stevens Point, graduating from Stevens Point High School in 1934.

He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he earned a teaching degree.

Following graduation in 1939, he taught at Stevens Point High School.

He entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II from 1942 to 1946 in the European theatre. He attained the rank of captain.

He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve for many years, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel.

He was married to Marie Wipperfurth on June 19, 1947, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Tomahawk. She died on Jan. 6, 2005.

Following the marriage, they lived in Stevens Point and later, when he took a position with the Hardware Mutual Insurance Company (now Sentry Insurance), he relocated to Grand Rapids, Mich. He finished his career with Sentry Insurance, retiring in 1977 after 30 years of service.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano.

He acted in plays at the Meilke Theater in Shawano.

Survivors include three daughters, Susan (Roger) Walczewski and Margaret McDuffee, both of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Barbara (Robert) Moura of Kingston, Mass.; five sons, John (Lynn), Stevens Point, Thomas, Wausau, William, Green Bay, Michael, Plover, and Timothy, Sarasota, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
