Wayne F. McGown
Wayne F. McGown, 79, Madison, who grew up in Stevens Point and held high positions in state government and the
University of Wisconsin system, died of cancer Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at HospiceCare in Fitchburg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Madison Christian Community, 7118 Old Sauk Road, Madison.
Visitation will take place at the Gunderson Funeral Home, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Mr. McGown was born Feb. 28, 1929, in Stevens Point, a son of the late Homer and Amy (Winkler) McGown. He grew
up in Stevens Point and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1946.
He attended Central State Teachers College, now the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and graduated from UW-Madison
with a degree in accounting and a master's degree in political science.
He was active in Scouting and received three of its highest awards, the Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope and Distinguished
Eagle Scout.
During the Korean War he was in the Army from 1951 to 1953 and later was in the Naval Reserve from 1959 to 1968.
Before beginning state service, he was a professional in the Boy Scouts of America for seven years. He then served
as a senior administrator for 20 years under Governors Nelson, Reynolds, Knowles, Lucey, Schreiber and Earl, and
another 20 years as special assistant to UW-Madison Chancellors Shain, Cohen, Shalala and Ward.
He ended his state career as the first director of the University of Wisconsin Research Park in Madison from 1984
to 1999.
He was married to Hildegarde "Hildy" Grevstad in 1961.
He was a long-time member of Advent Lutheran Church in Madison and a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administrators.
He served on many boards of directors, including Madison Christian Community, the local Boy Scout Council, University
Club, Downtown Rotary, National Association of Budget Officers, Association of University Research Parks, Center
of Community Partnerships (UW-Oshkosh), Telemark Interval Owners Association, and for 25 years on the Circus World
Museum Board.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Carrie (Kevin) McGinley, Middleton; two sons, Ron (Randee), Minneapolis,
Minn., and Daniel (Cindy), Madison; and five grandchildren. |
