Doris Hiatt Travis
Doris Hiatt Travis, 90, Stevens Point, died Monday, May 5, 2008.
A memorial service will be held at The Order of the Eastern Star (Masonic Lodge) at a later date. Burial will take
place at Mount Repose Cemetery in Friendship.
Mrs. Travis was born Feb. 21, 1918, in Havre, Hill County, Mont., an only child of the late Elmer and Bess (Noggle)
Hiatt. She attended school in many different cities in the Upper Midwest, graduating from Watertown High School
in Watertown, S.D., in 1936.
She then attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., graduating in 1940 and receiving bachelor of
science degrees in home economics and chemistry.
She taught school in Glenham, S.D., and Winona, Minn.
She was married to Dale Travis on April 12, 1941, in Mobridge, S.D.
They moved to the Stevens Point area in 1952.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Stevens Point Chapter, Arbutus Chapter 52 Order
of the Eastern Star, Mayflower Descendants of America Wing Family Association and a lifetime member of the Portage
County Historical Society, in which she was the organizing chairperson and the first president.
She was also active in Rainbow Girls Assembly 1, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts.
She was a past president of the Stevens Point Area Genealogical Society and researched her family genealogy, tracing
her family back to the 1300s.
Survivors include her husband, Stevens Point; two sons, Larry D. (Grace), Ashland, and James E., Shawano/Stevens
Point; one daughter, Susan E. (Roderick) Larsen, Jefferson City, Mo.; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. |
