Bruce E. Walther

Bruce E. Walther, 76, Stevens Point, a local ham radio operator, died Tuesday, March 31, 2008.

There will be no funeral service.

A party in his honor will be held in Bloomer, tentatively planned for July 12.

His family requests that donations be made to a favorite animal shelter in his name in lieu of flowers.

Mr. Walther was born July 18, 1931, in Chippewa Falls, a son of the late Ray and Irene (Maier) Walther. His mother died when he was 14 months old and he was raised in Bloomer by his grandparents, Theresa and Frank Maier.

He owned his own radio shop in Bloomer prior to entering the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean War for one year, 10 months and 20 days.

After service he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis and later worked for AT&T in Stevens Point until he retired in 1985.

He was married to Patricia Tanzer in 1956.

They lived in Stevens Point all their married life.

He was well known in the ham radio community, using the call sign W9QAH.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Debbie (Jim) Koziczkowski, Mary (Dave) Foust and Kathleen (Mike) Barefield; one son, Bob (Donna); one stepsister, Darlene Walther; and seven grandchildren.
