Robert J. Kirsling

Robert J. Kirsling, 82, 4718 Bridge Road, Lake DuBay area, died at home Sunday, March 30, 2008, while under the care of his family and Ministry Home Care-Hospice Services.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Knowlton, with the Rev. Joseph Grassl officiating. Cremation will follow, and burial of his ashes will take place later at the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be at Boston Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and at the church from 10 a.m. Friday until the Mass. There will be a combined veterans' ritual led by American Legion Post 6 at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Kirsling was born Nov. 27, 1925, in Chicago, Ill., a son of the late Felix and Elizabeth (Borchardt) Kirsling. Several years after his birth his family moved to Stevens Point. He attended St. Peter Grade School and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1943.

He joined the U.S. Navy on March 21, 1944, serving during World War II as a torpedo man on the destroyers USS Noah and USS Davison during the European campaign. He received the World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Area Medal and the American Area Medal. He was honorably discharged as a torpedo man mate 3rd class on Dec. 4, 1946.

Following service he returned to Stevens Point, working as a printer and then as bookkeeper for the 65 Cab Company. In 1957 he began his career with the U.S. Postal Service, first in Stevens Point and later as a rural carrier with the Junction City office.

He was married to Phyllis Rickfort on July 25, 1959.

He was a member of several church choirs and was involved with the Choraliers and the Stevens Point Barber Shoppers.

He was a member of several veterans organizations, including American Legion Post 6, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 568, Polish Legion of American Veterans, 40 et 8 Voiture 831, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 30 and Tin Can Sailors for the Destroyer Group he was in.

He was a Fourth Degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 1170, and he was a member of Stevens Point Elks Lodge 641.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Sarah (Keith) Raab, DuBay; and two grandchildren, Kaitlin and Nicholas.
