René Schneider

René Schneider, 87, of 2016 Lilac Court, Stevens Point, formerly of Whiting Road in Whiting, died Friday, April 4, 2008, at Stevens Point Care Center in Whiting after a lengthy illness.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church in Stevens Point at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, with the Rev. Susan Zencka officiating. Burial will be in the Western Reserve National Cemetery in Ohio at a later date.

Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. Saturday until the services.

Memorials may be sent to Ministry Hospice Home Care, The Deacon Fund of the Presbyterian Church or Interfaith Volunteers of Portage County in lieu of flowers.

Mr. Schneider was born Feb. 12, 1921, in Akron, Ohio, a son of the late George and Marie (Raccordon) Schneider. In 1931 he moved with his family to a small farm in Sterling, Ohio. He graduated from Milton Township High School in 1938.

He earned a bachelor's degree in science and education from Kent State University in 1942.

In July of 1942 he was drafted into the United States Army and served overseas later that fall. He served in the 56th Medical Battalion of the 7th Army in French Morocco, Sicily, Italy, Southern France and Germany.

After service he returned to Sterling, Ohio, and worked at the Ohio Boxboard Co. in Rittman, Ohio, as a chemist.

He was married to Mary Ann Bachman on March 29, 1947, in Rittman, Ohio.

In 1957, he moved his family to Stevens Point and he began working as a chemist, then technical director at Whiting-Plover Paper Co. before retiring in 1982.

He and his wife moved to a small farm south of Amherst until returning to Stevens Point in 2007.

He served on the Whiting Village Water Board and was an elder in the Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Jean Renée (David) Claytor, Ypsilanti, Mich., Joan (Ted) Wyman, Lakeville, Minn., Marilyn (Theodore) Welch, Beaverton, Ore., and Melanie (Brian) Nelson, Riverside, Calif.; two sons, Robert (Candice), Minnetonka, Minn., and Brian René, Milwaukee; two brothers, James (Ruth), Cleveland, Ohio, and George (Elaine), Lancaster, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.
