| Lt. Col. Henry J. Eiden Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Henry J. "Hank" Eiden, a Stevens Point native and brother of a Stevens Point woman, Charlottesville, Va., died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, after a long illness. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Mondayat Christ Episcopal Church in Charlottesville, Va. In recognition and honor of his distinguished military service, burial services with full military honors will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Visitation will be at Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville, Va., from 10 a.m. Monday until the service. Condolences may be offered online at www.hillandwood.com. Mr. Eiden was born Sept. 2, 1939, in Stevens Point, a son of the late Henry Michael and Virginia (Precourt) Eiden. He joined the U.S. Air Force under "Operation Boot Strap," becoming a navigator. He served with the Strategic Air Command at Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Michigan. During this time, he attended Central Michigan University, graduating with a degree in mathematics in 1965. In 1968, as a captain he entered the Georgia Institute of Technology, completing a masters in mathematics and course work for a doctorate in computer science. Following his time at Georgia Tech, he was a major and served as a navigator aboard the C-130 Spectre gunship flying out of Ubon, Thailand, from 1972 through 1973. After returning to the states, he fulfilled orders with Electronic Systems Command at Hanscom AFB, Mass., from 1973 through 1978. During that period, he also spent a year in Birkenfeld, Germany. His last tour of duty as deputy director of information systems was served at Offutt AFB, Neb. His lengthy Air Force career included numerous awards, including the USAF Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. In 1981, he retired from the USAF and settled in Charlottesville, Va. During retirement, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America Troop 114. In the mid-1980s, he re-opened a small azalea nursery. He also founded Eiden Enterprises Inc. in 1981 for computer consulting to government agencies in the central Virginia area. The company, now known as Eiden Systems Corp., continues to provide support to the Department of Defense, the Commonwealth of Virginia and various firms in Charlottesville. He later opened Virginia DanceSport Academy for ballroom dancing. Survivors include four daughters, Melanie Jo Eiden and Leslie Suzanne Eiden, both of Charlottesville, Va., Allison Marie (Eiden) Orta, Pearland, Texas, and Elizabeth Anne Eiden, Oakland, Calif.; two sons, Michael Douglas, Charlottesville, Va., and Henry Matthew, West New York, N.J.; two brothers, Maurice Eiden and Richard Eiden; one sister, Ruth Schulfer, Stevens Point; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Fredrick and Robert. |
