Meridith A. Masterson

Meridith A. Masterson, 69, Palatine, Ill., a Stevens Point native, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Northwest Community Hospital in Palatine, Ill.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church of Palatine.

Interment and graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Forest Cemetery in Stevens Point, with the Rev. Ed Hunt of Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral Home in Palatine.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Palatine, 800 E. Palatine Road, Palatine, IL 60067 and to the American Cancer Society.

Miss Masterson was born April 2, 1934, in Stevens Point, a daughter of the late Norton "Doc" and Cathryn (Wolfe) Masterson.

She graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1952 and attended Lawrence College in Appleton, graduating with honors. She received her master's degree in Spanish from Northwestern University. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.

She was a Spanish teacher and language department chair at Palatine High School until her retirement in 1992.

In 1985, Masterson was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the Illinois State Board of Education. She was also the recipient of the Delores Kohl Foundation Award for Exemplary Teaching and became a charter member of the Kohl Academy. She was the adviser of the school's National Honor Society, chaired school committees for North Central Association school evaluations and served on the Principal's Advisory Committee and the Foreign Language Curriculum Committee.

She was a member of American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages, American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, Illinois Foreign Language Teacher's Association, Illinois Education Association, National Education Association (life member), Phi Delta Kappa, North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and Township High School District 211 Institute Committee and Core Curriculum Committee.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Palatine where she served on the Board of Deacons and as a Sunday school teacher, Senior High Youth Group adviser, choir member and clerk of sessions.

She also served as secretary of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Palatine, worked with Young Life as a counselor and was recognized as an Outstanding Citizen by the Palatine Jaycees. She was also an active member of R.E.S.T. (Retired Educators and Staff Together).

Survivors include one sister, Cathryn (Wayne) Weinfurter, Land O Lakes; four nephews; one great-grandniece; and one great-grandnephew.
