Plover parks panel endorses skateboard facility
Plans for a proposed skateboard facility in Veterans Memorial Park will advance to the Plover Village Board.
The Plover Parks Development Committee unanimously voted to recommend the village build the facility when it met
Tuesday, Sept. 7.
If the Village Board approves the skateboard facility, the next step would be for the Parks Development Committee
to look at budget implications for its 2000 budget, said Dan McGinnity, committee chairman.
Officials are looking for private donations and possible Department of Natural Resources funding to offset the
projected $44,550 cost of the project.
When an association of skateboarders and their parents met last week to discuss the park, they felt a 50-50 split
between the village and skateboarders would be fair, said parent Nancy Schmidt. The association intends to go before
the Community Foundation of Portage County in October to seek funds.
"Depending upon your budget constraints, we would like to see this built in 2000," Schmidt said.
Some of the site elements could be installed in phases, but about $22,000 would have to be committed up front to
take care of earthwork, demolition, storm sewer, paving and fencing, said Village Administrator Dan Mahoney. There
is a possibility a DNR grant could fund one-half of the project, leaving the village and skateboard association
to fund other half.
"The more money we can raise, the quicker we can get it built," McGinnity said.
Plans call for building the 65-by-138-foot skateboard area in the southwest corner of the park. Site elements for
skateboarders include two quarter-inch pipes, a launch ramp, bench, curb, pyramid and two rails.
The Village Board is scheduled to act on the Parks Development Committee's recommendation when it meets Wednesday,
Sept. 15. |
