Police reports

Stevens Point
Someone stole four $100 bills from a woman's backpack sometime between 5 and 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at her home on Shaurette Street, a Stevens Point Police Department report said.

The Hilltop Pub and Grill Restaurant, 4901 Main St., reported someone stole a money bag containing $783 in cash and checks from a safe sometime between 11 and 11:40 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27.

Police arrested a 74-year-old Stevens Point man for annoying telephone calls Saturday, Aug. 28, after he made several nuisance 911 calls to the Police Department's dispatch center. He initially called to report he suspected a neighbor had trespassed on his property in order to paint her house. He kept calling to complain and swear at dispatchers.

Taking a corner too fast in his Pontiac Trans Am cost a 17-year-old Stevens Point a ticket and some repair costs. At 2:38 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, he made a right turn at a high rate of speed at the intersection of Welsby Avenue and Jefferson Street, causing the car to turn 180 degrees and end up in a lawn, a report said. The impact with the curb resulted in the right rear wheel of the car snapping off near the axle.

Police arrested a 36-year-old Stevens Point man at 8:06 a.m. Monday for transporting children under the age of 16 in the bed of his pickup truck, a report said. Police made the traffic stop on Church Street near Monroe Street after they saw two small children in the back of the pickup truck. He told officers he realized he shouldn't have the kids in the back, but he didn't have a car. Police advised him to make other transportation arrangements.

Portage County
Deputies are investigating a series of burglaries at area businesses, Portage County Sheriff's Department reports said. Someone broke into the Moore Barn, 6225 Highway 54, town of Buena Vista, sometime prior to 6:54 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, and stole $850 in cash and coins. Cedarwood Family Restaurant, Bancroft, reported someone broke in sometime prior to 6:04 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, but didn't take anything. Another Bar, 5505 Main St., Bancroft, reported someone broke in sometime prior to 8:56 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, and stole $900. Dave's Den, 5474 Main St., Bancroft, reported someone broke in sometime prior to 10:29 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, and stole an undetermined amount of cash. Deputies responded to a burglar alarm at Club Forest, 1176 Club Forest Drive, town of Plover, at 6:54 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 29. Nothing was reported missing.

One of the department's community policing officers, in conjunction with Amherst school officials, referred two boys to juvenile authorities for a Saturday, Aug. 21, burglary at Amherst High School, Capt. James LaMar said. The two Amherst-area boys, ages 15 and 16, allegedly stole $510 in cash from the school office. Authorities recovered $326 of the stolen cash. The boy's were referred for being party to the crimes of theft and burglary.

Portage County Groundwater
Citizens Advisory Committee

The Portage County Groundwater Citizens Advisory Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, in conference room 1 of the Courthouse Annex.

Items on the agenda include correspondence; updates from Continual Assessment Subcommittee, Public Involvement/Education Subcommittee and Groundwater Management Plan & Implementation Subcommittee; presentation by professor Bill Bland on model program; discussion on pesticide information data base and reports from members.

Whiting Utilities Committee
The village of Whiting Utilities Committee will meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, in the Whiting Municipal Center.

Items on the agenda include discussion/possible action on service repair charges, update of annual water works inspection, discussion/possible action regarding identification badges, update on emergency generator project bids, update on River Pines lift station project, update on consumer confidence report, operation and maintenance report and approval of bills.
