An 83-year-old Stevens Point man Tuesday afternoon of injuries he received in a car-pedestrian accident that morning, authorities said.

Harry R. Liebig, 501 Meadow St., appeared to have fallen while walking and was struck by a vehicle backing out of a private driveway at 517 Meadow St., according to the Wisconsin State Patrol. The driver of the backing car was Virginia A. Konop, 51, 517 Meadow St.

Liebig was transported by the Portage County Ambulance Service to St. Michael's Hospital with serious chest injuries and was pronounced dead of those injuries at 4:11 p.m., the State Patrol said. The accident happened at 9 a.m.

The Stevens Point Police Department responded to the accident. Konop is a dispatcher for the department.

"To avoid any possibility for the suggestion of impropriety in the handling of the investigation, this department requested the assistance of the Wisconsin State Patrol, District 4, to conduct the accident investigation," Police Chief Douglas Carpenter said.

The crash remains under investigation.

So far this year, 18 persons have died in traffic accidents in Portage County.
