Portage County

Accidents
Car-deer accidents are a common occurrence on county roads, but motorists should also keep an eye out for other large wild animals.

A 21-year-old Wausau woman struck a black bear Saturday, Aug. 14, while she was driving on Highway O, one-half mile south of Townhall Road in the town of Carson, a Portage County Sheriff's Department report said. The accident happened in the dark at 9:41 p.m.

The collision caused severe damage to her two-door 1989 Honda Civic, the report said. She was able to drive it away from the scene.

Police reports

Portage County Sheriff's Department deputies found 16 mailboxes damaged in the south-central part of the county on Monday, Aug. 16, a Portage County Sheriff's Department report said. Three were in the town of Grant and 13 in the town of Pine Grove.

Deputies and the department's K-9 unit were called to help search for two women, ages 39 and 55, who became lost Monday, Aug. 16, while berry picking in the town of New Hope, a report said. The two women started picking at about 5 p.m. on private land near Highway ZZ, one-half mile north of Highway Q. After the two failed to return, family members went to the area and found their car. They contacted the Sheriff's Department shortly before 11 p.m. and a deputy found the two women a short time later east of River Road, one and a quarter mile north of Highway Q. The women had two large buckets of berries with them and a compass. They said they were unable to use the compass after it became dark and they got lost.
