MSTC board approves bond sale
WISCONSIN RAPIDS - The Mid-State Technical College Board of Directors approved a resolution awarding the sale of
$800,000 in general obligation promissory notes at its monthly meeting Monday evening.
Nelson Dahl, vice president of finance and administrative services, said the bond sale is part of the college's
overall capital funds activities scheduled for fiscal year 1999-2000.
In other action, the board approved the appointment of several individuals to four Health Careers Advisory Committees.
Each of MSTC's programs functions under the auspices of the board and an appointed advisory committee.
Advisory Committees provide technical and professional expertise and include employer and employee representatives.
Sally Zillman, Marshfield, was appointed to the Health Unit Coordinator Program Advisory Committee.
Appointments for the medical assistant program include Kelly Gregorich, Marshfield; Laurie Reilly, Stevens Point;
and Steven Warren; Wausau.
Appointments to the respiratory care practitioner program include Rachel Boehning-Anderson, Dr. John Campbell and
Ed Grant, all from Marshfield; Jim Mohr and Cathy Wiater, Wisconsin Rapids; Thane Mules, Iola; Joe Rohling and
Lou Ann Sanders, Wausau; and Greg Spindler, Eau Claire.
Appointments to the surgical technician program include Steve Springer, Stevens Point; and Tyler Thompson, Junction
City.
The board heard an update on the respiratory care practitioner (RCP) program from Mary Zurawski, vice president
of academic services. According to Zurawski, the two-year associate degree program, available on MSTC's Marshfield
campus, is listed among the fastest growing occupations by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
"This is one of the higher salaried careers we train for," Zurawski said. Respiratory therapy is an allied
health specialty used under medical direction in evaluation, treatment, and care of patients with cardio-pulmonary
problems. Students in the RCP program receive both classroom instruction and clinical experience.
Lynn Meyer, director of marketing and planning, presented a report on the college's annual career camp for seventh,
eighth and ninth graders, held recently on the Wisconsin Rapids campus. According to Meyer, 90 junior high students
participated in Totally Tech '99. "Participants selected one of seven career options for hands-on learning
and exploration," Meyer said. "Career choices offered included computer electronics, cosmetology, emergency
medical technician (EMT), law enforcement, machine tool, photography and small business and the Internet,"
Meyer added.
He said 40 students took advantage of the free busing opportunity offered for the first time this year. "The
response to this year's event was terrific. Another exciting activity was the parent and family participation during
the closing session."
Meyer said plans for next year's career camp may include expanding the event to three days.
In final meeting action, the board denied a faculty grievance and the relief requested.
The next board meeting will be held on Monday, Sept. 20, at the Wisconsin Rapids campus. Committee meetings will
begin at 5:30 p.m., with the Board meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. |
