Security measures identified for Gilfry Center

The Portage County Space and Properties Committee will install security measures in Gilfry Center.
Judy Bablitch, director of the Health and Human Services Department told the committee Monday that the issue of security has been raised in the building because of the many exterior doors and open hallways.

Bablitch said the center has experienced some break-ins and some employees are nervous about working in the building because of its open concept. The center was constructed when there were no threats about security.

Dennis Kolodziej, county superintendent of facilities, said a Stevens Point police officer came to the building and walked through it, and no one knew he was there.

Changing the reception area and installing some security doors should rectify the situation for about $25,000, Kolodziej said.

The committee also requested $65,000 for a landscaping project at the center that includes installing a lawn sprinkler system and eliminating a hazardous mowing area to reduce maintenance and avoid liability problems. Kolodziej said the county had a workers compensation case after a worker was injured while mowing grass on an incline.
