Institute of Corrections (NIC) will present its preliminary findings regarding overcrowding at the Portage County
Jail on Thursday, Feb. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon in conference rooms 1 and 2 of the County Courthouse Annex.
Portage County has spent more than $1 million since January 2000 to house excess
inmates in neighboring counties' jails so it asked the NIC to study the situation. The county received a Planning
of New Institutions (PONI) grant to examine the local justice system and processes in order to help find a solution
to the problem.
