Former NFL star will headline prostate symposium
Saint Michael's Foundation will present a statewide prostate health symposium with a National Football League keynote
presenter, in Sentry Theater, Stevens Point on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Pre-registration is
required through HEALTHLINE at 346-LINE.
Headlining the program, at 10:40 a.m., is keynote presenter Len Dawson, a retired quarterback of the Kansas City
Chiefs quarterback and a member of the NFL Hall of Fame who is also a television commentator. He will share his
personal experience as a prostate cancer survivor.
The symposium will be offered free of charge through sponsorship from Rice Medical Center, TAP Pharmaceuticals,
Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Merck & Company, American Medical Systems, Alza Pharmaceuticals, AstraZeneca, Ortho-McNeil
Pharmaceuticals, Solvay Pharmaceuticals and Saint Michael's Foundation.
Jim Schuh, local commentator and a writer for The Gazette, will emcee the day's program. The first presenters will
be Bob and Nikki Meloskie, a husband and wife team from "Family to Family: Americans for Prostate Cancer and
Awareness." Bob Meloskie is a prostate cancer survivor and, together, the two will share the various relationship
issues which arise in a man and woman sharing the experience of prostate cancer.
A panel of local physicians will follow the Meloskies' presentation to share the latest information on prostate
health and treatment of prostate cancer. The panel will include Dr. John Fuller, a urologist from Rice Medical
Center/Ministry Health Care, Dr. Michael Huncharek, a Marshfield Clinic radiation oncologist from St. Michael's
Hospital Cancer Center, and Dr. William See, a professor and chief of the division of urology at the Medical College
of Wisconsin.
Each of the panelists will present specific areas of expertise. Fuller will share an overview of prostate health
and the surgical options available to prostate cancer patients. Huncharek will explain the details of radiation
treatments and the latest technologies in this area. See will highlight the latest treatment options and technologies
available to prostate cancer patients.
Following Dawson, Mark Moyad, a nutrition expert from the University of Michigan, will speak. At the university,
Moyad is involved with research to study the connection between nutrition and prostate cancer, and is currently
studying to become a physician. He will be presenting various nutrition updates and suggestions for healthy lifestyles.
Throughout the day, beginning at 6 a.m., a limited number of free cholesterol screenings will be provided by Pfizer
Pharmaceuticals. Pre-registration is required, with HEALTHLINE, for the screenings. Educational booths will also
be displayed to offer information and answer participants' questions about blood pressure, cholesterol levels and
pharmaceutical options.
