Three in family die in plane crash

A plane crash at the Stevens Point Municipal Airport Thursday, Aug. 30, killed three Stevens Point residents who were all members of the same family.

Killed in the crash were the pilot, Jay F. Tillman, 73, 319 Green Ave., his son, Stuart J. Tillman, 42, 321 Green Ave., and Stuart's son, Cody Tillman, 14, 321 Green Ave.

The Stevens Point Police Department was notified of the crash at 6:14 p.m., authorities said. Responding police and fire personnel determined the single-engine airplane, a Beechcraft Musketeer, had crashed on takeoff. All three occupants died at the scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.

The crash was the first fatality since the early 1940s.
