Portage County capsules PEARL HARBOR SHOW: A National Geographic program on Pearl Harbor featuring Will Lehner of Whiting will air at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 27, on CNBC (Channel 39 on Stevens Point's Charter Communications system) or the National Geographic Channel. In late November and early December Lehner took an all-expense-paid trip to Hawaii, courtesy of National Geographic, to participate in a documentary about the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Lehner, of 433 McDill Ave., Whiting, was at Pearl Harbor when the shooting began,
on a destroyer, the USS Ward, that sank a Japanese midget submarine outside the entrance to Pearl shortly before
carrier-based Japanese planes attacked the U.S. fleet inside the harbor. * * * HOSPITAL OFFERS MEMORIAL SERVICE: A memorial service for those who have recently lost a loved one at St. Michael's Hospital, will be held on Monday, May 21, at 7 p.m. in St. Michael's Hospital Chapel. Conducted by St. Michael's Spiritual Services staff, the memorial service is open to the public to honor and remember those individuals - patients, hospital employees, or family members of employees - who have recently passed away. For more information, contact St. Michael's Hospital Spiritual Service Department at 346-5362. * * * NOEL ADDRESSES UW-SP GRADS: John Noel, president and CEO of Travel Guard Insurance and the Noel Group, will address the 2001 spring graduates and their families at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 20, at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Noel, Stevens Point, heads the leading travel insurance company in the country. A Wausau native and 1971 graduate of UW-SP, Noel was named a Distinguished Alumnus in 1999. The program at the Specht Memorial Forum will open with the national anthem sung by Andrea Kaminski, a music education major from Stevens Point. UW-SP's ROTC color guard will present the flags and Provost and Vice Chancellor Bill Meyer will welcome the participants and recognize honor students and award winners. Assistant Chancellor for Student Affairs Bob Tomlinson will commend the James H. Albertson Award recipients and Chancellor Thomas F. George will introduce the speaker. George also will present diplomas and give the charge to graduates. Robert Spoerl, president of the UW-SP Alumni Association, will give the charge to alumni. Music will be provided by the UW-SP Commencement Band under the direction of Professor James Arrowood. Professors William Kelley and Dan Dieterich will introduce each candidate for graduation. Graduating senior Andrew Halverson of Stevens Point will speak about "Opportunities" on behalf of his class. The son of Scott and Kim Halverson, 3139 Dan's Drive, he graduates with a double major in political science and public administration and policy analysis. He is a 1996 graduate of Stevens Point Area Senior High School. * * * UPPER WHITING PARK CEREMONY: The village of Whiting will hold a dedication ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday, May 18, in Upper Whiting Park to commemorate the completion of the educational kiosk representing the cornerstone of the village's efforts to preserve the archeological and historical significance of prehistoric Indian mounds located in the park. The kiosk will be dedicated in honor of the long-term service of Paul J. Krueger for contributions to the village as a trustee and supporter of the village park system. Tom Willems, regional archeologist and director of the Central Wisconsin Archeological Center, will give a short program at 1 p.m. in the Whiting Municipal Center, 3600 Water St., highlighting archeological studies in the park. * * * MEMORIAL DAY SERVICES: Memorial Day services will be held throughout Portage County on Monday, May 28. Plover VFW Post 10262 and American Legion Post # 543 will hold a number of ceremonies
at cemeteries and memorials in the Plover area. After the ceremonies conclude at Veterans Memorial Park, a potluck will follow at the Plover VFW clubhouse on Hickory Drive. Members of the Rifle Squad are to assemble at the Plover VFW Clubhouse on Hickory Drive at 7 a.m. The Polish Legion of American Veterans, Greater Polonia Post 185, will hold its 25th Annual Veterans Memorial Mass, at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 27, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Polonia. * * * BIKE TO WORK EVENT: The Portage County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advocacy Group will host a ride and breakfast for Bike to Work Day on Tuesday, May 22. The group is launching its "Come Ride With Us" Campaign, which is designed to share a bicyclist's eye-view with elected officials and other decision makers in the community. The invited guests will ride with members of the Advocacy Group at 7 or 8 a.m., followed by a small breakfast to discuss bike and pedestrian planning priorities. The Advocacy Group will discuss bicycle and pedestrian planning goals with the guests and the public at 9 a.m. The public is encouraged to bike or walk to work on Tuesday. Persons biking to work are invited to stop at the Bike To Work area on the Public Square in Stevens Point for a free breakfast from 7-9 a.m. The Stevens Point Area Co-op, Temptations of the Hearth and GottaHavaJava are donating the breakfast. On Tuesday, May 29, summer library hours begin and remain in effect until Labor Day. There will be no Sunday hours during summer, but they will resume after Labor Day. The Almond Branch Library's hours are Monday and Thursday, 1-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon. At the Charles M. White Library hours are Monday and Thursday, 9:30 a.m.-8 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon. Hours at the Plover Branch Library are: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 1-8 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon. The Rosholt Branch Library hours are Tuesday, 1:30-5 p.m. and 5:30-8 p.m.; and Thursday, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. * * * OBEY REPRESENTATIVE HOLDS OFFICE HOURS: Amy Sue Vruwink, district representative for U.S. Rep. Dave Obey, D-Wausau, will hold office hours from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 25, in the Portage County Courthouse Annex in Stevens Point. Anyone wishing to visit or who has a problem with a federal agency is invited to stop in. * * * OVERNIGHT PARKING: Overnight parking restrictions will be relaxed this summer in Stevens Point. Regulations restrict overnight parking of vehicles to not more than 30 minutes between 2 and 6 a.m. on public ways, but allow the Police Department to make exemptions. Traditionally, the department has authorized appropriate requests for one night. Between May 25 and Sept. 4, the department will grant permission to appropriate requests for up to four continuous nights. Any owner or operator of a motor vehicle requesting overnight parking permission should contact a police dispatcher at 346-1500 and provide the following information: make of vehicle, license plate number of vehicle, location where vehicle will be parked and a telephone number to contact the owner or operator. Vehicles parked without permission, or in violation of these restrictions, are subject to enforcement action. * * * ROAD CONSTRUCTION INFORMATION: The city of Stevens Point is now broadcasting Stevens Point area road construction information on Cable Channel 10, 24 hours per day, seven days per week until the University of Wisconsin's Student Television returns in the fall. More detailed road construction information is also available on the city's Web site at ci.stevens-point.wi.us. * * * PORTAGE COUNTY BUILDING PERMITS: The Portage County Planning and Zoning Department reported that building permits for 18 single family residences valued at $3,089,527 and one commercial building for $500,000 in the town of Plover. The residential buildings include four in the town of Hull valued at $1,157,000, three in the town of Sharon at $479,027, two in the town of Dewey for $424,500, two in the town of Stockton for $365,000, two in the town of Grant for $230,000, two in the town of Amherst for $185,000, one in the town of Alban for $145,000, one in the town of Carson for $84,000 and one in the town of Almond for $20,000. * * * STEVENS POINT BUILDING PERMITS: Stevens Point issued permits for one five-unit multiple family building and seven single family residences in April. The five-unit building valued at $275,000 is being constructed at 725 Prentice St. The single family homes, and their valuation are 5249 Hampton Road, $275,000; 3317 Glacier Drive, $200,000; 554 Brilowski Road N., $165,000; 5541 Oakwood Ave., $150,000; 5500 Elmwood Ave., $150,000; 124 Indiana Ave. N., $132,000; and 5354 Clover Court, $100,000. * * * PLOVER BUILDING PERMITS: The village of Plover issued a building permit for one commercial building and three single family residences in April. The permits were for a $90,000 commercial building at 1405 Integrity Parkway and residences valued at $160,000 at 1851 Oakcrest Drive, $135,000 at 2080 E. Breezewood Court and $130,000 at 4801 Still Meadow Lane. |
