List of former grocery stores grows

The March 2 issue of The Gazette story on old grocery stores in Portage County sure attracted a lot of notice. By e-mail, personal visits and the post office, names of old stores rolled in.

Also, we left out the names of some current stores, Stevens Point Area Co-op, 633 Second St., and Waller's Market in Nelsonville.

Readers developed their lists from memory, often recalling how they remembered the names. Bob Worth and Bill Jajewski drew up the lists of stores they visited while making deliveries. Worth also used a city directory from 1946 to bolster his memory, and said the A&P Store was a Piggly Wiggly store first.

Wally Jakusz picked the names out of a 1926 telephone book he rescued from a trash pile. Robert Oberst got his list from a 1950 telephone book he picked up at a rummage sale.

Besides those mentioned above, we got lists from Mary Ann Powell, Dorothy Zmuda, Ethel Sprague, Wilton Chapin, Florence Krutza Kostuch, Ramona Krutza Simons, Dave Shafton, Ed Peltier, Jack Waller, Whitey Worzalla, Cindy Eagon, Pat Trebatoski, Mary Doudna, Jim Kruziki, Barb Walloch in Florida, Lois Tufte, John Wasniewski and Herman and Mary Lassa.
