County has had lots of grocery stores
By GENE KEMMETER
of The Gazette
The pending sale of Stevens Point's Copps Corp. to Roundy's Inc. of Pewaukee will bring an end to another of Portage
County's locally owned grocery stores.
The Copps name will reportedly continue to identify the stores after the transaction, so the name won't disappear
from stores immediately.
Portage County's history is full of names of grocery stores that disappeared from the landscape, mostly small neighborhood
stores that carried meats, produce and dry goods.
Presently, the county has a handful of grocery stores that continue to operate. Besides the three stores owned
by Copps, there's County Market, Gene's IGA in Rosholt, Amherst Family Foods in Amherst, Almond Village Market
in Almond, Blaine Store in Blaine, Bancroft Foods in Bancroft, Feltz's Grocery in the town of Stockton, Ernie &
Irene's in Polonia and Sylvia's in Polonia.
In addition, convenience stores, which primarily provide gasoline, also offer some groceries.
Evidence of long-closed neighborhood grocery stores remain throughout the area. Many of the former stores have
been converted into other uses.
Can you add to the list of these now-gone stores and their location? If you can, drop us a note via regular mail
at P.O. Box 146, Stevens Point, WI 54481 or e-mail at pcgazette@g2a.net.
