National Wellness Conference brings health experts to Point

The 26th Annual National Wellness Conference will be held Saturday, July 14, to Friday, July 20, on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus.

Presented by the National Wellness Institute Inc. of Stevens Point, the week-long conference attracts hundreds of visitors and offers more than 200 presentations, breakout sessions and workshops. Dr. Bill Hettler, director of UW-SP Health Services, is president of the National Wellness Institute's board of directors.

Twelve tracks are offered - work site, aging, hospital, campus, managed care, K-12, community, complementary medicine, at- risk populations, technology, general wellness and personal renewal.

From 7:30-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Wayne and Mary Sotile, co-directors of the Sotile Psychological Association, will give the member keynote and reception address. They will speak about "A Hero's Journey: Creating Safe Space for Others." They offer guidelines for juggling multiple roles, resolving communication differences and maintaining a high level of creativity and stress resilience. He is also the director of Psychological Services of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Wake Forest University.

Shirley Mae Springer Staten will give the welcoming keynote address from 4:15-5:15 p.m. Sunday, entitled "A Look Beyond: Finding Hope, Compassion and Possibility in Our Lives." A dyslexic, she graduated from high school not knowing how to read, but by the early 1990s she had earned bachelor's and master's degrees.

Barbara Stoker, president of Barbara Stoker and Associates, will give Monday's keynote address from 8-9:15 a.m., entitled "Climb Your Own Mountain with IntelligentRisking." Stoker has more than 20 years experience with some of the country's most innovative companies in strategic planning, marketing, customer service and new business development.

Wendy Lynch, will give Tuesday's keynote address from 8-9:15 a.m., entitled "Work Affects Health, Health Affects Work: Human Performance as a Connector Between Business and Health." She is a faculty member at the University of Colorado-Denver.

Jane Houston, co-director of the Foundation for Mind Research, will give Wednesday's keynote address from 8-9:15 a.m., entitled "The Odyssey to the Outer Reaches of Inner Space." A weaver of myth, storytelling, music, art, dance and directed play, her work challenges the known boundaries of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

Dr. Edward Creagan, professor of Clinical Oncology at the Mayo Medical School, will give Thursday's keynote address from 8-9:15 a.m., entitled "The Wellness Movement in America: Yes, We Have Arrived." Creagan is the author of "How Not to Become a Cancer Patient."

Two keynote addresses are planned for Friday. From 8:15-9:30 a.m., Robin Casarjian, president of the Lionheart Foundation, will present "Forgiveness: A Bold Choice for a Peaceful Heart." From 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Dr. Therman Evans, president and CEO of Whole Life Associates, will present "Putting Wings on Your Dreams."
