DRUG CHARGES:
The Stevens Point Police Department has had its second big drug bust in a week. Acting on leads, officers conducted a search warrant at 1117 Prentice St. and found 2.5 pounds of marijuana, $9,921 in cash, 140 Alprazolam tablets, 162 Methocarbamol capsules used to "cut" (dilute) cocaine, 97 Ritalin capsules and six other substances in capsule and tablet form not yet identified, a department report said. Three University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point students were arrested and jailed. Police requested the District Attorney's Office charge a 20-year-old Middleton man with marijuana possession with intent to deliver, marijuana delivery, possession with intent to deliver Scheduled II and Scheduled IV controlled substances and bail jumping. A 21-year-old Madison woman faces marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession charges. A 20-year-old Appleton man faces marijuana and drug paraphernalia charges, and was put on a probation hold.

COMMUNITY PLAY COMING: The Community Foundation of Portage County will present its 5th annual play, "Saturday Point Fever" at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 and 26 and at 2 p.m. on Feb. 27 at the Sentry Theater.

Steven Senski has again put together a script that is full of local humor. This original disco-era comedy, both written and directed by Senski, pokes fun at the residents and happenings of Portage County. Local personalities such as Stan Potocki, Shannon Semmerling and Gary Wescott will be performing. There may even be a special appearance by Esme, the alien-fighting cow.

Tickets are on sale now for $10 per person and are available at the UW-SP Arts and Athletic ticket office by calling 346-4100.

All proceeds from the play and other foundation events are returned to the community by way of grants.

SNOWMOBILER ARRESTED: While on patrol at about 11 p.m. Saturday, a Portage County Sheriff's Department deputy saw a snowmobile being driven in an unsafe manner along Eisenhower Avenue in the town of Plover, a department report said. The snowmobiler ignored signals to stop and fled at a high rate of speed on a snowmobile trail. The deputy followed on roads and the six-mile chase ended along Highway J after the snowmobile struck a snowbank and, later, a tree. After a 75 yard foot chase, the driver, a 20-year-old Plover man, was taken into custody on charges of driving while intoxicated, unreasonable and imprudent speed during darkness, failure to stop for law enforcement officers and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He was uninjured in the crashes.

SENTRY, EMPLOYEES DONATE $25,650: Sentry Insurance and its employees and retirees donated $25,560 to Operation Bootstrap and the Salvation Army during a special fund-raising campaign in November and December.

The Sentry Insurance Foundation matched employee and retiree gifts of $12,825 made to the two local charities, with Operation Bootstrap receiving $14,020 and the Salvation Army $11,630.

Sentry Cares, a Sentry employee and retiree organization, sponsored a food drive and holiday basket program, collecting more than 1,900 canned and boxed nonperishable food items at the three Stevens Point locations. The food donations were divided between Bootstrap and the Salvation Army.

Sentry employees also sponsored 22 area families through the holiday basket program, providing food and gifts to more than 90 individuals.

'PORTRAITS OF HEART HEALTH' TELEVIZED: Ministry Health Care's "Portraits of Heart Health" television special will air at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, on WAOW-TV, Channel 9, in Wausau.

"Portraits of Heart Health," the latest installment in Ministry Health Care's Health Connection series, features real-life heart heroes and many area health care providers.

In the show, host Nancy Christopher talks with five people who, after experiencing heart trouble, underwent different heart procedures and were given a second chance at life.

Now, to prevent future problems, they're striving to live more heart-healthy lives.

Topics of the program include recognizing the symptoms of a heart attack, rehabilitation and prevention, stress and heart disease, women and heart disease, congenital heart defect/birth defect. Dr. Randal Wojciehoski, a physician in St. Michael's emergency department and Corie Birkholz, a certified exercise physiologist with St. Michael's cardiac rehabilitation department, are two of the featured health care experts in this special.

At the end of the broadcast, viewers will be invited to call a toll-free phone number for free Heart Wellness Kits.

MODEL TRAIN SHOW THIS WEEKEND: The Central Wisconsin Model Railroaders Ltd. and the CenterPoint MarketPlace will present the third annual Arctic Run model train show on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 27 and 28.

Modular, or sectional, HO-scale layouts from Stevens Point, Waupaca, Rice Lake and Marshfield, as well as the N-gauge layout from the CWMR will be displayed. All five layouts feature central Wisconsin themes and scenery. Operation of the trains will be from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Several demonstrations on railroad modeling tricks and techniques will also be presented in the center court area. A schedule will be posted listing the times and items being demonstrated.

The CWMR has restored the Bancroft depot located in the Portage County Historical Society's Heritage Park in Plover. The club's permanent location is in the basement of the depot. WELLNESS FAIR SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 3: St. Michael's Hospital will present Celebrate Wellness on Saturday, March 3, in CenterPoint MarketPlace. The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Celebrate Wellness, formerly known as The Wellness Fair, is Portage County's largest wellness recognition day. Now in its 16th year, the event will feature more than 60 booths of wellness-related organizations and businesses.

Open to the public, Celebrate Wellness will offer participants a variety of health screenings, children's activities, entertainment and numerous opportunities to discover health and wellness services available in the community.

The hospital is currently recruiting organizations and businesses who are interested in exhibiting at Celebrate Wellness. Booth fees are $55 for nonprofit groups and $110 for businesses if registered by Feb. 9. Exhibit registration is open to wellness-related organizations and businesses.

FEINGOLD HOLDS LISTENING SESSION: U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., will hold a listening session at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at the Almond Municipal Building, 122 Main St., Almond. The meeting will last up to one hour.

Feingold has pledged to hold listening sessions in all of Wisconsin's 72 counties each year of his six-year term, and this will be his Portage County session.

FREE CAREER-PLANNING COURSE: Mid-State Technical College is offering a free adult career planning course at the Stevens Point campus, 933 Michigan Ave., beginning Feb. 12. Classes will be held on Monday and Thursday evenings, from 5:15 to 8:30 p.m., Feb. 12 through March 15.

The course is designed to help adults assess their abilities and career interests, to investigate and consider all career possibilities and to learn how to use a wide variety of resources in their career search. Students will be able to determine their career interests and abilities through various testing and personal evaluation methods and also will be assisted in making a career match that is best suited to them.
