Stevens Point throws annual party

Riverfront Rendezvous, Stevens Point's annual Fourth of July party, kicks off at Pfiffner-Pioneer Park on Friday, June 30.

Rendezvous is a good excuse to party with friends and neighbors, while listening to music or just visiting. )A story on Rendezvous and a schedule can be found in County Fare.)

Road construction may cause some problems during the weekend and wreak havoc for area residents out to view the fireworks Sunday night.

Sgt. Ron Carlson of the Stevens Point Police Department's Traffic Bureau said he encourages people to park away from the riverfront and walk to the fireworks. "Enjoy the family outing with a walk," he said.

Crosby Avenue will be closed to traffic from Portage Street to the municipal parking lot, he said.

With Clark Street closed off from Water to Division streets due to construction, Carlson said access and egress are limited, so traffic will be restricted in several spots.

Traffic using Second Street will have to go all the way to north Fourth Avenue to turn east as the streets between Fourth and CenterPoint Drive will be blocked, he said.

On Water Street, traffic will have to go south to Brawley Street before they will be allowed to turn east, he said.

Officers will be out to try to keep motorists moving from the parking areas once the fireworks end.

Viewers on the west side will probably run into more problems because W. Clark Street is torn up, he said, and parking is limited.

Despite the construction and switching of detour route, Carlson said police are impressed with citizens of Stevens Point and the area who have adapted to the conditions. "People are holding their own," he said. "For the most part, people have taken this very well and done a heckuva job."
