YMCA offers exercise class for new mothers

The Stevens Point Area YMCA is offering a program for both new mothers and their babies, called "Strollers and Rollers," to help mothers get back to their pre-baby routine.

"This class enables new moms to get out of the house and enjoy the company and support of other new moms while participating in light exercise," says instructor Jackie Meyers.

During this class, mothers use their baby strollers as props. Pushing and pulling their babies in the stroller provides moms with resistance for strengthening, and stabilization during stretching. The 45-minute class pays special attention to postpartum abdominal and back strengthening exercises, for an effective, safe workout.

Meyers said that not only do new moms get a great workout; their babies love the class, too. Babies are entertained by the constant movement of the stroller and by eye contact with mom. One mother said, "This class gives me a reason to get dressed in the morning."

Meyers said, "There aren't many classes that allow mothers to include their children. This is good bonding time between mother and child. Family is important to us at the YMCA, and this is just another way for us help make community families healthy and happy," she said.

The next "Strollers and Rollers" class will run Oct. 5 through Nov. 9 on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. at the YMCA. Physician's clearance is required. Register at the Stevens Point Area YMCA, or call 342-2980 with any questions.
