UW-SP's Carlsten Gallery will open season Tuesday
Sculpture, pottery and ceramics will be displayed at the Carlsten Gallery in the Fine Art Center at the University
of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the season's first exhibition beginning Tuesday, Sept. 7.
The show opens with a reception on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m. and will run through Sunday, Sept. 26. The reception
and exhibition are free and open to the public.
"Ostracons: Ceramics and Words," is a sabbatical exhibition of work by Anne-Bridget Gary, associate professor
of ceramics in the Department of Art and Design. Ostracons is an Egyptian or Middle Eastern word for a pottery
fragment used for a written message. Some of Gary's writing and photographs of her travels to Japan and Korea
will be included in the show.
Gary's ceramic work includes both sculptural pieces and functional pottery. Work by some of the Japanese master
potters with whom she studied during her recent sabbatical in China will also be in the exhibition. Included are
pieces by the Tazaki Family from Aizu-Hongo, Fukushima Prefecture, and Yushi Itoh from Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture.
Gary will give lectures about the work at 5:15 p.m. in room A206 of the Fine Arts Center on the following dates
and topics:
Sept. 14, "Life as an Artist."
Sept. 21, "Japan: Family Pottery Residencies and Experiences."
Sept. 28, "China and Korea: Teapots and The Whole Life."
The Carlsten Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the Fine Arts Center and is open Monday through Friday,
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.; and Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. when performances are
held in the Fine Arts Center.
Gary has worked and traveled extensively in Japan, China and Korea and has exhibited her work throughout the U.S.
and abroad. Her ceramic sculpture and pottery are in collections ranging from the Transco Corp., Houston, Texas,
to the Kavic Corp., Amsterdam, Holland. |
