DAR program reviews Thanksgiving celebration
Doris Dahlke presented the program "Thanksgiving Then and Now" at the Nov.
10 meeting of Nay-osh-ing Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution at the Sky Club.
She told of the Pilgrims and their first Thanksgiving and brought Thanksgiving dates and times of celebration through
the various presidents, ending with Franklin D. Roosevelt settling on the fourth Thursday in November as the date.
She closed by reading the proclamation and prayer of President George Washington proclaiming Thursday, Nov. 26,
1789, as the first national Thanksgiving.
Chapter regent Ann Hacker conducted the opening ceremonies and read the President General's message from the November
DAR Magazine. She passed the issue around and noted that it contained the chapter's annual ad honoring her and
the three living regents, Betty Rosine Andringa, Vera Duesterbeck and Hope Niedling.
Shannon Moore, national defense chairman, read the article "The Fundamentals of Americanism" by Nat Hentoff
as reprinted in the November NSDAR National Defender. Moore, chairman of the George Washington Bicentennial Tribute
committee, asked members to remind their church pastors to include Washington's prayer in their Dec. 18 sermons.
Louise Hansen, Flag of the U.S.A. committee chairman, told of the proper ways to display the flag and handed out
a list of the days the flag should be displayed.
She also reported on the education and historical committees of the National Society Daughters of the American
Revolution with members adding comments and asking questions.
Patriotic committees will be discussed at the next meeting at 5 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Sky Club. Members are to bring
their Christmas gifts for the residents at Tomah Veterans Home. |
