Chelcun selected as Scholars candidate

Brian Chelcun, a graduating senior at Stevens Point Area Senior High School, has been selected as one of 2,600 candidates for the year 2000 Presidential Scholars Program. Candidates were selected from nearly 2.8 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2000.

The program, in its 37th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon high school seniors, with scholars selected on the basis of academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.

The 2,600 candidates were selected after their performance on the College Board SAT or ACT assessment. A panel of educators will review student essays, self-assessments, descriptions of activities, school recommendations and school transcripts and select 500 semifinalists in early April.

The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars will make the final selection of scholars, selecting one man and one woman from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. students living abroad, plus up to 20 students from the creative and performing arts and 15 students at-large.

Chelcun is the son of Greg and Cindy Chelcun, Stevens Point.
