Activities for and news about seniors

The Department on Aging offers classes and activities for older adults. The Portage County Aging and Disability Resource Center is a one-stop resource about services for seniors, adults with disabilities, their families and caregivers. Unless noted otherwise, the following take place at Lincoln Center, 1519 Water St., Stevens Point, during the week of April 26.

The Caregiver Support Group will meet at Lincoln Center from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Stephanie Whiting from Riverwood Counseling Center will provide information on relaxation techniques. An evening meal will be provided and respite services (through the National Family Caregiver Support Program) are available so that caregivers can attend. No charge, but registration is required. For more information, to arrange for respite services or to register call Julie Genrich at 343-6305.

The new season of "Wake Up to Opera" begins Wednesday at 10 a.m. Through hand-outs, discussion and viewing of videos, Betty Jenkins will look at the 10 most performed operas in North America.

The Stress Relief Team will offer 15-minute chair massage on Tuesday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Cost is $12. Call 346-1401 for an appointment. Chair massage consists of massage to relax the muscles of the upper body, the neck, shoulders, arms and hands.

"Ask Law Enforcement" is a joint service offered by the Stevens Point and Plover police departments and the Portage County Sheriff's Department. On Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. an officer from one of these departments will be available at Lincoln Center to answer questions and provide information on law enforcement topics of special interest to older adults. Please feel free to stop and chat.

Wisconsin River Academy students from Stevens Point Area Senior High School are working on a history project about the Wisconsin River in Portage County and are conducting interviews with people who grew up living near or working on the river. At Friday's "Get to the Point" at 9:30 a.m. there will be a presentation about the project.

Monday, April 26

8:30 a.m.: Seniorobics.

9 a.m.: Wood carving.

9:30 a.m.: Open computer lab with tutor to 11:30 a.m.; mixed media art.

10 a.m.: Smear.

11 a.m.: PACE exercise; chair massage to 1 p.m.

11:30 a.m.: Music by Geary Larrick.

12:15 p.m.: "Snacking Can be Healthy" at Sunset Manor in Almond.

1 p.m.: Canasta; continuing Spanish; RSVP Silver Threads; Parkinson's Support Group.

2 p.m.: Chip carving.

6:30 p.m.: Dr. Jerry Twit on the nervous system.

7 p.m.: Laryngectomy Support Group.

Wednesday, April 28

1 p.m.: Foot care clinic; Polish, pinochle; knitting.

1:30 p.m.: Open computer lab with tutor to 3:30 p.m.

2 p.m.: T'ai chi.

4 p.m.: Caregiver Support Group.

Thursday, April 29

Friday, April 30

Lunch menu: Tuna salad sandwich, chicken noodle soup, three bean salad, fruit, strawberry shortcake.
