Activities for and news about seniors

The Department on Aging offers classes and activities for older adults at Lincoln Center, 1519 Water St. (unless noted otherwise below), during the week of Jan. 21. The Portage County Aging and Disability Resource Center is a one-stop resource about services for seniors, adults with disabilities, their families and caregivers. Want to know how to trace your roots and fill in your family tree? Ruth Steffen will provide suggestions and techniques for genealogical research (including use of the Internet) on Monday at 2:30 p.m., with a repeat session at 6:30 p.m. for those who can't attend the early class.

Wayne Reed will discuss the role of the Red Cross at the Sept. 11 World Trade Center disaster at "Get to the Point" on Friday at 9:30 a.m.

Openings are still available in the acrylic painting and chip carving classes. Acrylic begins Monday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m., with instruction by Judy Gray of Mid-State Technical College. Kathy Brunner teaches chip carving on Tuesdays at 2 p.m.

"Ask Law Enforcement" is a joint service offered by the Stevens Point and Plover Police Departments and the Portage County Sheriff's Department. On Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., an officer from one of these departments will be available at Lincoln Center to answer questions and provide information on law enforcement topics of special interest to older adults. Please feel free to stop and chat.

The Parkinson's Support Group will meet Tuesday at 1 p.m. People with Parkinson's, caregivers, family members and anyone interested is welcome to attend. The group is co-sponsored by the Department on Aging and the Wisconsin Parkinson Association.

Monday, Jan. 21
