RED CROSS SWIMMING LESSONS: The American Red Cross of Portage County will hold registration for the third session of its swimming programs on Monday, Jan. 28, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the CenterPoint MarketPlace. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Swim School Program holds lessons at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UW-SP) pool on Mondays and Thursdays. The Learn to Swim Program is held at the P.J. Jacobs Junior High School pool on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Classes are 30 to 40 minutes in length and will run for seven weeks. SCHOLARSHIPS TO PACELLI: The Pacelli High School Educational Foundation scholarship applications are available now to any new freshmen, transfer student and returning student to Pacelli High School for the 2002-2003 academic year.

Three scholarships will be awarded to students in each grade level 9-12, with a total of 12 scholarships to be awarded.

The board of trustees will award the 12 scholarships for $600 each, a total of $7,200, to recognize students for a variety of accomplishments and to encourage students to continue excelling in school. Application considerations include overall success and involvement in school, service activities and an essay about attending Pacelli High School.

Scholarship applications are available at SPACS, St. Peter Middle School and Pacelli offices. For more information on scholarship opportunities, contact Pamela Owens at 341-2445. Application deadline is Friday, Feb. 1.

SPECIAL NEEDS AQUATICS: The Special Needs Aquatic Program (SNAP) at UW-SP will offer sessions for adults this spring.

The classes are designed for adults with arthritis, older adults looking for a low-impact workout or adults with disabilities. Two sessions will be held, the first from Monday, Jan. 28, through March 22, and the second from April 1 to May 17. Classes are held twice a week.

The first eight-week session costs $36 and the second seven-week session costs $31.50. Classes are held in the therapeutic pool in the Health Enhancement Center on the UW-SP campus, adjacent to the Quandt Fieldhouse on Fourth Avenue.

CHILI BOWL SUPPER: St. Anne's Society (PCCW) of St. Joseph Church in Stevens Point will sponsor its 24th Annual Chili Bowl Supper on Sunday, Jan. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Parish Family Center.

Chicken soup and hot dogs will also be served. Adults are $4, children $2.50 and a hot dog plate is $1.50. Carryouts will be available. The public is invited.

JUHNKE RETIRES FROM UW-SP: Rollie Juhnke, a tax-sheltered annuity and retirement specialist who has been director of personnel services for the past 29 years, left his post at UW-SP at the end of December 2001.

Director of personnel, labor relations, payroll and staff benefits programs, Juhnke has spent a total of 39 years working in human resources.

Juhnke spent many years serving on the UW System Tax Sheltered Annuity Review Committee which advises UW System President Katharine Lyall on administration of the tax shelter program for all UW staff. From 1997 through 2001, Juhnke served as chair of the group that he judges to be the best committee in the UW System.

Juhnke also taught classes on personnel management, labor relations and other personnel related topics; led financial planning and retirement sessions for university employees; and published papers for the U.S. Department of Labor and the Journal of the College and University Personnel Association.

Upon their retirement, Rollie and his wife, De, who is leaving the College of Letters and Science Dean's Office, plan to stay in Stevens Point where their two daughters live. Travel itineraries include trips to Europe, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand. He also plans to pursue hobbies of photography and fishing.

YMCA ADDS NIA: The Stevens Point Area YMCA has added Nia to its Mind-Body class offerings. Nia (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) uses dance and movement patterns blended with moves from martial arts, dance, yoga and other mind-body disciplines. Nia is a cardiovascular workout designed to balance strength and flexibility while emphasizing gentleness. It is appropriate for all fitness levels.

Registration for this class is currently available to Y members. Registration begins Monday, Jan. 14, for the general public. For more information call the Stevens Point Area YMCA at 342-2980. Financial assistance is available.

TEACHING FOR DIVERSITY SUMMIT SCHEDULED: A faculty member and special assistant to the vice chancellor at the UW-SP has received $400 from the UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity to support a reading group and scholarly exchange in conjunction with a teaching summit on diversity this month.

Kit Werner, administrative intern in academic affairs on half-time release from her duties as a lecturer in nutritional sciences, will use the money to purchase copies of "America's Banquet of Cultures: Harnessing Ethnicity, Race, and Immigration in the Twenty-First Century" by Ronald Fernandez. Fernandez will be the keynote speaker at the diversity summit Jan. 16 and 17 at UW-SP.

The reading seminar is one of UW-SP's campuswide activities in conjunction with Plan 2008 "Forging a Culture of Diversity." Plan 2008 is a Systemwide initiative to increase awareness and presence of diversity faculty, staff and students on UW System campuses. Werner will serve as moderator of the seminar.

Participants in the seminar include Jin Wang, associate dean, College of Letters and Science; Barb Mihm, lecturer, business and economics; Jeanne Pawielski, pharmacy manager, health services; Maureen Giblin, academic tutoring coordinator, Teaching and Learning Center; Barbara Butler, associate professor of anthropology; Ron Hensler, professor and coordinator of soil and waste resources; Ron Strege, director of Multicultural Affairs; Michelle-Brophy-Baermann, associate professor of political science; Catherine Dugan, lecturer of English; Marty Meyers, associate professor of business and economics; Nancy Bayne, associate vice chancellor of personnel and budget; and Gary Cumley, associate professor of communicative disorders.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL REGISTRATION: The Stevens Point Area Catholic Schools (SPACS) will hold registration for preschool through 12th grade for students for the 2002-2003 school year during the week of Jan. 14-18. REYNAUD'S DISEASE LECTURE: Dr. Leo Powers will present a lecture on Reynaud's disease, a disease of the sympathetic nervous system, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Powers Chiropractic, 2585 Post Road, Plover. Powers will go over the medical approach and the conservative global chiropractic approach to restoring balance between the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system. This disease process causes too much reaction to cold, causing white and sometimes blue hands and feet.
