Activities for and news about seniors

The Department on Aging offers classes and activities for older adults at Lincoln Center, 1519 Water St. (unless noted otherwise below), during the week of July 9. The Portage County Aging and Disability Resource Center is a one-stop resource about services for older adults, people with disabilities, their families and caregivers. The Parkinson's Support Group will meet Monday at 11 a.m. People with Parkinson's, caregivers, family members and anyone interested is welcome to attend. The group is co-sponsored by the Department on Aging and the Wisconsin Parkinson Association.

Do you have questions about, or suggestions for, services for older adults in Portage County? Department on Aging director Janet Zander will be available on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. to meet with anyone having those concerns.

"Puccini's Women" will be the focus with Betty Jenkins at Wake Up to Opera on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Older adults with vision problems are invited to join the Visually-Impaired Persons Support Group which will meet Wednesday at 1 p.m. There are discussions, presentations, information about adaptive aids and problem-solving ideas to share.

Blood pressure screening will be held on Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon. Registered nurses will conduct checks and provide the latest information on control. Cost is $1 and reservations are not required.

Family members and/or caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias are invited to attend meetings of the Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group on Tuesday at 1 p.m. and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Find out what works - and doesn't work - in providing care, participate in discussions, share problem-solving ideas and learn about the latest research. Respite services are available so that caregivers can attend.

The Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care and the Living Will are tools which help people plan for making difficult decisions about life-extending health care. Find out more in Health Care Advance Directives on Tuesdays, July 17 and 24, at 6:30 p.m. This workshop is sponsored by the Stevens Point Area Retired Teachers Association. An informational packet including the necessary forms and instructions will be provided at the July 17 session; volunteers will help people fill out the forms on July 24, if needed. Free-of-charge, and open to people age 18 and over.

Monday, July 9

8:30 a.m.: Seniorobics.

9:30 a.m.: Help with health concerns and medication management with Fern Johnson, R.N., to 11:30 a.m.

10 a.m.: Smear; Holly Shoppe open to 4:30 p.m.

11:30 a.m.: "Chat with Janet;" music by the Grenadiers.

1 p.m.: Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group.

Lunch menu: Polish chop suey, tossed salad, chilled fruit, sherbet.

Wednesday, July 11

Department buses: Almond, Amherst and Junction City areas to Stevens Point 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

9 a.m.: Cribbage.

10 a.m.: Wake Up to Opera; Holly Shoppe open to 4:30 p.m.

11 a.m.: Confidential counseling to 3 p.m.

11:15 a.m.: Stevens Point Post Office will sell stamps at Lincoln Center to noon.

11:30 a.m.: Casey Drake at the organ.

1 p.m.: Foot Care Clinic to 4 p.m.; Visually-Impaired Persons Support Group; pinochle.

Lunch menu: Roast turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, carrot coins, dinner roll, chilled fruit.

Thursday, July 12
