The Portage County Aging and Disability Resource Center offers senior center classes and activities in addition to its one-stop resource about services for older adults, people with disabilities, their families and caregivers. "New Therapies in Arthritis" will be presented by Debra Wilson, M.D., of the Department of Rheumatology at the Marshfield Clinic, on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Lincoln Center. The program is sponsored by St. Michael's Hospital and Merck & Company. No charge. To pre-register, call Healthline at 346-5463. Transportation may be available - call the Department on Aging to request a ride.

Support group meetings this week: Alzheimer's Caregiver on Tuesday at 1 p.m. and Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Visually-Impaired Persons and Loss of Spouse on Wednesday at 1 p.m., Self-Help for Hard of Hearing People on Friday at 1 p.m.

Registration forms are available at Lincoln Center for the Central Wisconsin Senior Olympics, May 22 to 25. Deadline for sign-ups is May 12 for golf and bowling, and May 17 for all other events. For people age 55 and over, this year's events include tennis, bowling, pool, miniature golf, horseshoes, shuffleboard, golf, track and field, opening ceremony and awards banquet.

For Mother's Day lunch on Monday, May 15 will honor moms and women. Reservations should be made no later than noon of Friday, May 12.

Confidential counseling services for older adults are available at Lincoln Center on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with appointments scheduled on an hourly basis. Linda Leindecker, M.S.W., of the Mental Health Clinic of the Portage County Department of Health and Human Services can assist people with problems of depression, anxiety, relationship and grief issues, or any other personal or family concerns. For an assessment and to make an appointment, call Information and Assistance Specialist Joan Cantlon at the Department on Aging, 346-1405. These counseling services can be billed to Medicare, supplementary insurance or Medicaid; remaining costs (if any) are based on a sliding fee scale. No one is denied service because of inability to pay.
