Gazette seeks info on events

By BILL BERRY
of The Gazette

"Do not go gentle into that good night."

So wrote Dylan Thomas in his timeless poem of the same name.

Thomas' words should be taken with a bit of caution. After all, he lived hard and died young.

But as general advice to others, it ain't bad. The good life is there for the taking, and it doesn't cost much around here.

In the coming weeks, the Gazette will expand and enrich its coverage of the good things available to people willing to get off the couch and get out a bit.

The aim is to offer up a mix of arts, entertainment and general fun and to do it with some flare. We have some surprises in store, too. We'll be informative, we'll try to touch as many bases as we can and, above all, we'll have some fun. Believe me, there are enough characters coming through the little office on Strongs Avenue to accomplish the latter, and then some.

But we'll need your help. Have an upcoming music, arts, entertainment event? Church picnic, school play, bazaar? We want to know about it. It's easy to contact us, and we're so much fun to talk to. Ring us up on the telly at 343-8045. Or stop by at 2182 Strongs Ave. We have some of those new-fangled machines, too. Our fax machine works. The number is 343-8048. Heck, we even have e-mail. It's pcgazette@g2a.net. Truth is, the latter is preferred. If you send us the text in an e-mail, it ends up in our little computers, and that means we don't have to bother inputting it. That way, we can go about the business of having fun at your events. But if you insist, we'll take the information any way you bring it in.

Sometimes we'll fit it into our growing list of events. Sometimes we'll turn it into a story. We'll also accept pictures and graphics. Hey, we're downright easy.

The mix of entertainment, arts and general fun in central Wisconsin is rich. And you don't have to be rich to enjoy it. If you're willing to drive a bit, you can find something almost any night of the week, and at a decent price.

A for instance: Los Lobos, that wonderful rock band from East L.A., performed at an outdoor concert in Wausau this summer for five bucks. A great show, a great setting and a heck of a cheap ticket. From Wausau, Los Lobos went straight to Summerfest in Milwaukee, playing to thousands. Back in central Wisconsin, Riverfront Rendezvous got under way in Stevens Point a few days later. That was free.

Most of the other events available here are quite affordable, unless you're a complete tightwad or you're worried about having enough money to consume too much alcohol or you're just looking for a lame excuse.

Saturday night, George Winston takes the stage at Sentry Theater for a 7:30 p.m. show. Winston could well be considered the father of New Age music. He isn't single-handedly responsible for popularizing New Age, but he sure has left his imprint on the genre. Hmmm, genre. Kind of an artsy word for the little paper on the south side.

Anyway, Winston has performed in Stevens Point a couple of times. In at least one of those performances, he took the stage barefoot. You can get away with that in September. Not advisable in January, George, unless you have a pair of shoes at the stage door.

The Wausau Daily Herald did a nice feature on the village of Amherst in its Sunday paper last week. Writer Pat Peckham noted that on one recent night, there was live music at Déjà vu Bar, The Amherst Coffee Company and the Jensen Center. All quality shows, too.

Chances are, there were at least a dozen other entertainment options in the area that same night.

We're going to tell people about those options, and have fun doing it.

Watch this baby grow, and watch for those surprises in the next few weeks.

We promise you'll have fun. And we promise not to go gentle into that good night. No, we plan to "Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

Oh, and thank you, Mr. Thomas.
