UW-SP Homecoming activities run Oct. 6-10

The end of the millennium may be months away, but the party begins now.

"The New Millennium Mayhem" the theme for Homecoming '99 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will be held Oct. 6 to 10. The celebration will feature many new and traditional events.

The centerpiece of the weekend will be the Homecoming '99 football game and parade on Saturday, Oct. 9.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. on Isadore Street and winds through campus to Goerke Park. It will include the Alumni Marching Band and floats by campus organizations, residence halls and community organizations. Before the parade, UW-SP alumni and friends are invited to enjoy coffee and donuts, beginning at 9:30 a.m., in the Berg Gym Lobby.

The football game begins at 1 p.m., when the Pointers take on the UW-River Falls Falcons at Goerke Field. Tickets for the game are available by calling 346-4100 or 1-800-838-3378.

Fun will continue throughout the weekend.

The Student Cotillion Ball also will be held at 8 p.m. in The Encore of the UC.
Events for students will begin with a bonfire on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 8 p.m. on the east campus intramural fields.

On Thursday, Oct. 7, the Women's Rugby Prom Dress Game will begin play at 4:30 p.m. on the intramural fields near Michigan Avenue. Talent Night will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Melvin R. Laird Room of the UC.

Activities on Friday, Oct. 8, will include a Pointer women's tennis match with UW-Whitewater at 3 p.m. in the Health Enhancement Center and opening night of the Theatre Department's production of "The Odd Couple (Female Version)" at Jenkins Theatre in the Fine Arts Center at 8 p.m. The show also will run on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. and will continue the following week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Socials for Alpha Phi Omega, the Alumni Marching Band, and Tau Kappa Epsilon are planned for Friday evening.

Another Pointer women's tennis match, this time against Ripon College, will be held Saturday, Oct. 9, at 10:30 a.m. in the Health Enhancement Center. The women's soccer team will take on UW-La Crosse at 1 p.m. on the UWSP soccer field.

Alumni of Pointer women's softball teams will play at 11 a.m. on Saturday on McCarty Field.

Also on Saturday at 11 a.m., the Alumni Association will co-host events with four departments. In two events that are new this year, Division of Communication alumni will gather in the Communication Arts Building and Political Science Department graduates will meet at the Isadore Street Brewing Company.

The College of Natural Resources has traditionally held reunions each Homecoming, and this year they will hold two events. At 11 a.m., all CNR alumni are invited to get together with faculty and staff members in the CNR building and the class of 1974 will celebrate their 25th year reunion. Later, CNR alumni will mingle with faculty members at 4 p.m. in the Point Brewery's hospitality room.

Interior architecture and retail studies graduates have held reunions during Homecoming for several years. This year, they will gather for camaraderie in the Agnes Jones Gallery, which will feature a special display of current work by interior architecture students and alumni.

A special celebration will commemorate International Programs' 30th year in the Wright Lounge of the UC. Alumni of semester, interim and summer abroad programs will gather to share memorabilia and renew acquaintances with fellow participants and leaders.

University Centers will host an alumni picnic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for former students who worked in the centers or were involved with activities or organizations housed in the centers.

Alumni, friends and football fans are invited to gather for the post-game Fifth Quarter Reception in the La Follette Lounge of the UC at 4:30 p.m.

The Homecoming Banquet features induction of this year's honorees into the UW-SP Hall of Fame. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. Saturday with a cocktail reception and cash bar. Pointers to be inducted are Bob Berceau, '91, Jerry Lawetzki, '67, Beth Mears, '92, George Rivers, '65 (posthumously), Debbi (Shane) Smith, '90, and Don Solin, '78. This year's Athletic Directors Award Recipient is Mike Okray, Stevens Point. For ticket information call the Alumni Relations Office, 346-3811, before Sept. 30.
