Barbershoppers will host annual Harvest of Harmony

A familiar sign of autumn - the Stevens Point Barbershoppers' annual Harvest of Harmony - will be held Saturday, Oct. 2, at Sentry Theater.

Two performances are slated: a 3:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. evening program. The evening program will be followed by an afterglow.

"Steaming on the Robert E. Lee" is this year's theme. It's a musical riverboat review. "The show will relive the days of the steam-driven sternwheelers which ran up and down the Mississippi, bringing entertainment to so many," says Chapter President Pat Rydberg.

"The local chorus, the Northern Gateway Chorus, has been working hard and long on a number of exciting tunes. We know everyone will love the program," Rydberg said.

The evening's program will also feature two guest quartets, Excalibur from the Twin Cities in Minnesota and Ham 'n' Wry from the Appleton area.
"Excalibur is a highly acclaimed quartet…and will knock your socks off with their great singing ability," says Jack Edgerton, chapter membership vice-president and long-time member. Ham 'n' Wry is a comedy quartet.

"Barbershop music is truly an American treasure, something everyone likes," says marketing vice president Dan Schobert.

Tickets are available at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point box office and at Sweet Briar in downtown Stevens Point. They are also available from any Barbershopper or by calling 344-1147. Tickets at the door cost $9 for the matinee, and $12 for preferred seating or $10 for reserved seating for the evening program. Tickets purchased in advance cost $1 less.

Barbershop music got its start in Tulsa, Okla., about 60 years ago. The International Association is based in Kenosha and has about 35,000 members.
