Thanks 90FM for trivia event and all the fun

Thanks, WWSP 90FM, for the 32nd Annual Trivia Contest . For 54 straight hours each year, usually in April, Jim "Oz" Oliva and John Eckendorf entertain listeners with questions so they can find the answers.

For some players, trivia means a year of preparation, taking notes while watching TV and movies, clipping stories from newspapers and magazines or collecting books. These individuals usually populate the top teams.

Those who don't take the contest as seriously use the Internet to provide them with quick access to references worldwide. The "trivia stone" and the "running questions" offer something to those who don't care much for books or computers.

Many players find the weekend an enjoyable social weekend, gathering with friends they see only once a year and recalling old times. On the running questions, players from various teams walk together in groups as they collect answers from store windows or signs, visiting as they go along.

In order to bring about this enjoyable weekend, many people put in a lot of work. The organization to bring off the event is monumental. Musical play lists need to be readied. Teams of volunteers need to be scheduled to answer the telephones and work as disc jockeys. Additional lines need to be installed. Donors need to be contacted, and arrangements made for food.

Throughout the contest, the station had to contend with technical problems. Lightning apparently struck the station's antenna last summer, and parts have been gradually replaced as they broke down. Periodically, the station's signal flickered, but then bounced back, staying on the air for the duration of the contest.

Now, the thousands who gathered have less than a year to prepare for the 33rd Annual Trivia Contest. That event is scheduled for April 19, 20 and 21. There's a lot of people in this area who can't wait.
