Veterans Day more than just a day without mail

The nation pays tribute to veterans of the armed forces again on Saturday, Nov. 11, with the observance of Veterans Day.

Despite the gratitude that should be shown to those who served, particularly those from World War II, the day will largely go unnoticed by many.

Even the federal government has removed the luster from the tribute, observing Veterans Day as a federal holiday on the fourth Monday in October. The only reasons most people may realize it's Veterans Day are because the U.S. mail isn't delivered and banks and state and federal offices are closed. Other than that, it's usually a regular workday, particularly for most veterans.

Portage County veterans will commemorate Veterans Day on Saturday, Nov. 11, with a program at the CenterPoint MarketPlace at 11 a.m. Put off doing those weekend chores for an hour or so and join them.

Show them appreciation for the time they served.
