Visit the polls to decide referendum

Voters in the Stevens Point Area Public School District go to the polls on Tuesday to vote on a school referendum.

The important thing is to get out and vote. This is a special election, the second for the school district in the last year. And it's something state legislators have been railing about - the number of special elections for school referendum issues.

However, the school referendums appear to draw better participation here than the regular elections. Last year, the district held a referendum in November, when no other elections were scheduled. In Stevens Point, 23.41 percent of the registered voters went to the polls. In April, the state's primary election and several local contests drew only 17.49 percent of the registered voters in Stevens Point and 19 percent of the eligible voters in Portage County.

While special elections cost more to run, maybe state legislators are jealous because school issues attract more voters than their races. Hopefully, despite the scheduling of the election, voters will come out to voice their opinion on this important referendum issue.

That's the important item. Get out and vote.
