Inside the Portage County line

NOT HOT ENOUGH:
Air conditioners began operating in the last week as temperatures soared into the 80s. While the high temperatures set records in many parts of the northern U.S., the highs in Stevens Point weren't enough to set records.

In fact, the temperatures could be considered rather mild for the month. The highest for the week was 85 on Sunday, May 7, below the record of 90 set in 1896. The record highs for most of May are in the 90s.

ORDINANCE VIOLATION: The Village of Whiting is recognizing past Village President Thomas Hagen this week, and plans to honor him annually, per a resolution adopted at his last meeting in May 1999.

Village Clerk Debra Lutz told The Gazette that Hagen attended the Village Board meeting Tuesday night and thanked the board for the large banner displayed in front of the Whiting Municipal Center.

Lutz said Hagen received some comments on the golf course Tuesday even before he saw the banner! Tom's comment was he thought the banner might exceed the ordinance requirements for signage in the Village.

"All of us at the village miss Tom's humor," Lutz said.
