Inside the Portage County line

HISTORIC PHOTOS: More historic photos
are adorning the walls of the County-City Building, at least on the city side of the building.
Stevens Point added the pictures that more than double the number on the walls.
The pictures are of businesses, homes, schools, churches and public buildings, most of which no longer exist. Some
of them make a person long to see them again. Sometimes the buildings that still exist aren't recognizable because
of alterations.
One photo, for example, is easily recognizable. In the Community Development office
hangs a photo commemorating the June 12, 1955, donation of Soo Line Railroad train engine 2713. The train in the
park at the southeast corner of Church and Monroe Streets is due for renovation in the coming year.

TATER TOOT DELICACY: Tater Toot in Almond
celebrates the potato industry in the area, but another entrée has become a favorite of visitors.
The Almond Lions Club, which just celebrated its 37th annual Tater Toot, offers
pork chops on its menu with the chicken dinner. The pork chop has become the favorite of diners, selling about
800 meals.
One entrant from Wisconsin Rapids in the Old Car Show at Tater Toot said he was
undecided about returning for the event until he remembered the pork chops. The thought of having another pork
chop made the decision easy, he said.
Almond residents know they can get the pork chops more often. They're available
at the Village Market in Almond by asking for the "secret" Tater Toot seasoning. As stated, the seasoning
is a Tater Toot secret.

TEAM REUNION: Softball players who played
in the 1970s through 1990s for Colorcraft, Golden Sands Bar, The Dugout, Business Consultants, Archie's, Top Hat,
Hilltop and The Outcasts got together for a reunion Saturday, July 29, at Rhody's. Instead of a softball game,
some of the players got in a round of golf.
Six men were on the roster of all those teams, Tim Shannon, Jeff Brown, Gary Hetzer,
J.D. Manville, Rod Hoeth and Rhody Mallick.
Shannon, one of the reunion organizers, said only nine players wanted to participate
in a game of softball, which fittingly might have been held at the old Stockton ballpark on Highway J. The team
played in many tournaments at the field, which is scheduled to be torn down for a highway interchange.
