ELKS SALUTE SOCCER PLAYERS: The Stevens Point Elks Lodge treated the girls soccer team from Stevens Point Area Senior High School to a carbohydrate dinner Monday night at the Elks Club.

Margaret Domka of the Marquette University soccer team, a SPASH alumnus, talked about making the transition from high school to college soccer. Nancy Leek, who has been active in youth soccer for years, gave a motivational speech.

Steve Seramur of the lodge points out that this is the fourth consecutive year team members have been guests at the club for a youth activity. Elks are also the second largest contributor to scholarships in the nation, he added, second only to the U.S. government.

About 140 persons, including the players and their families, attended the event.

ROUSING CONCERT: If you want to sit back, relax and listen to a concert, the University of Wisconsin Marching Band isn't for you. The band performed for the Big Brothers Big Sisters fund-raiser Saturday at the SPASH fieldhouse and showed why it's a fan favorite for the Fifth Quarter performance after UW athletic events.

The high-stepping band marches in an energetic style, drawing the crowd to its feet to show its appreciation.

The enthusiastic director, Michael Leckrone, sends band members into the audience to assist the band in various ways, and the band itself is likely to march through the audience, even going up the bleachers.

By sitting in the "Bob Uecker" seats in the far corner of the gym a spectator might be able to avoid joining the action. Maybe.
