When I was young, there weren’t many people in my life who achieved the age of 80.
There were a few, of course, like Uncle John – a great uncle – who lived to 94. But one of my grandmothers died at 65, one grandfather at 75, while the other grandmother died at 80, and my remaining granddad lived until 83. Neither of my parents made it past 72.
Many of us who can remember a few relatives who lived to their 80s and they probably seemed old. That is in comparison with many today who have reached their 80th birthday.
Some claim 80 is the new 70, or maybe even the new 60. Today, many people who are 80 don’t seem old at all. Either my perceptions have changed or people who reach 80 today are in greater shape, generally. I hope it’s the latter.
