Richard “Butch” Wanserski, 91, was shot down over Germany and was taken prisoner on his fifth bombing mission.
He was one of five boys and four girls in the John and Elizabeth (Kruzicki) Wanserski family from Rosholt. All five boys served during World War II at the same time: Ervin, Larry, Dan, Ralph and Richard.
Richard was born in Galloway, but the family moved to Rosholt when he was young and he graduated from Rosholt High School. He spent a year in college at Central State Teachers College (now the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point) before the war, planning to go into engineering. “I got a scholarship for $20 a month,” he said.
