An automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament will be on the line when the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) competes in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament in Whitewater this weekend.
The 12th-ranked and third-seeded Pointers (28-9, 14-8) will take on second-seeded UW-La Crosse (24-14, 16-7) at 1 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater, while second-ranked and top-seeded UW-Whitewater (32-6, 19-4) is set to host fourth-seeded UW-Stout (20-19, 10-14) in the other opening round matchup at 10 a.m. Friday.
The double-elimination tournament will conclude with the WIAC Tournament Championship at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10, with a second Championship Game at 6 p.m. Saturday if necessary, as the winner will advance to the NCAA Division III Regional Wednesday through Sunday, May 14 through 18.
“We’ve always taken great pride in the way that we’ve been able to play in our Conference Tournament and how often in recent years we’ve been able to hold up hardware at the end of it,” said UWSP baseball head coach Pat Bloom, who has guided the team to seven WIAC Tournament Titles in the last nine years. “However, this year might pose the biggest challenge of any that we’ve faced in recent years, because of the fact that there’s so much parity amongst the four teams in our tournament.”
