LaVerne N. “Sy” Syens, 74, Stevens Point, a supervisor on the Hull Town Board, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Ministry St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield after a battle with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, at Faith Reformed Church, 1321 32nd Street North, Wisconsin Rapids. Burial will be at Faith Reformed Cemetery in Vesper.
Visitation will be at Boston Funeral Home in Stevens Point from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 12, and at Faith Reformed Church from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the services.
Donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Mr. Syens was born Feb. 17, 1940, in Friesland, a son of the late Peter J. and Elsie (Gaastra) Syens. He graduated from Randolph High School in 1958 where he was a three sport athlete (basketball, football and baseball) and played tuba in the band.
He was married to Donna Mae Dexter June 2, 1962, in Wausau.
He held a variety of jobs in his early years and worked as an insurance claims manager until his retirement.
He was an auctioneer in his spare time and often volunteered for charity auctions. He was a member of the Town of Hull Board since May 2010.
He was a longtime member of the Stevens Point Barbershoppers and the Faith Reformed Church choir.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Donna of Stevens Point; three daughters, Doreen (Rob) Reznicek, Stevens Point, Lisa (John Kurzinski) Syens, Plover, and Kari (Chris) Colombo, Appleton; two brothers, John (Karen) Syens, Fort Atkinson, and Duane (Beth) Syens, Wisconsin Rapids; and five grandchildren, Jacob, Connor, Michael, Elise and Chloe.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Sheryl Pomraning.
