A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Kingwood, Texas, with Pastor Al Doering officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery in Amherst, where a gravesite service will be held.

Mr. Engel was born May 2, 1934, in Marion, a son of Helen (Johnston) Engel and the late Forrest Engel. As a teen, he was active in the Boy Scouts, eventually becoming an Eagle Scout.
He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and joined Shell Oil Company.
He was a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves for 12 years.
He was married to Elaine Eskritt Feb. 7, 1959.
He and his family moved around the U.S. as Shell sent him wherever his skills were needed, including homes in Montana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Colorado and Louisiana, before finally settling in Kingwood, Texas, in 1974.
In 1986 he accepted the position of resident general manager for Pecten (Shell’s overseas operations) in Cameroon, Africa, where he and his wife lived for two years. He also served five years as manager of Coordination Pecten in Syria before retiring in 1993 after 35 years with the company.
He traveled on all seven continents. He was a woodworker who often made gifts of the birdhouses that he designed and built. He served on the Kingwood Water Board and was active in the Christ the King Lutheran Church in Kingwood.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Jill (Glen) Engel-Cox; his mother, Helen (Johnston) Engel; one brother, William (Marion) Engel; nieces; and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Robin; and one sister, Beverly (Engel) Huehnerfuss.
