Ms. Hammond was born June 24, 1927, in Milwaukee. Her early years were spent in Neenah with her mother and elder half-sister. At the age of 5, they moved to Ohio and then to California, following the jobs.
She returned to Wisconsin for a time under the guardianship of an aunt and attended junior high school. She returned to California and attended Hollywood High School, graduating a year early due to academic excellence. She then attended the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), paying her own way and studying psychology, art and horticulture.
She was married to John Bersch, a musician and drafting engineer, in May 1952. He preceded her in death.
She held a variety of jobs, including as a horticulturist, with Rosedale Nursery and later as a groundskeeper at her alma mater, UCLA.
After her husband’s death she returned to Wisconsin, settling first in Waukau, followed by Packwaukee and then Stevens Point.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Janet, who died at age 2-1/2.
